The word of God does the work in our lives by the power of the Holy Spirit. Colossians 3:12-17
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Last week we looked at the things that we are called to put off. It is often easier to look to avoid certain things rather than trust the Holy Spirit to put on things in our life, but through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can be made more and more like Jesus until the day when God brings us home.

Romans 5:1-5 - Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Matthew 7:13–20 (ESV): Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
Main Point
Pursue life at all costs and flee those who would seek to steal it.
As Jesus comes to the end of the Sermon on the Mount he shows us again that he is the true and better Moses. Like Moses did in Deut. 30, Jesus sets before his disciples two paths: the narrow gate leading to life and the broad gate leading to destruction. We must enter by the narrow gate and we can only do this through the death, resurrection, and imputed righteousness of Jesus, and we can only walk the road set before us by the Spirit, strengthened by grace, and according to his word. But there are those who seek our destruction and set before us a broad path. These are false prophets who dress like sheep but are really ravenous wolves. We must flee them. And we will know them by the fruit of their lives. II Corinthians 11, James 3, and Jude all provide detailed examples of what these false prophets look like. We need a true prophet. Jesus is that true prophet who speaks the words of God and is himself the narrow gate, the way of life, and the healthy tree. Abide in him, cling to him, and follow him and you will find life.
